What Is A Phobia?

Phobia is a term used to signify a type of fear depending on a person’s object of fear. It is normal for children to have a number of objects of fear may it be a difficult examination in the school, listening to the noise of a thunder storm or just being fearful from a barking dog.

However, when dealing with children with specific phobias, they have an extreme fear that does not go away instantly. This does not scared them only once or twice but most of the time. They generally move away from the object of fear so not to scare themselves.

 

What Is A Panic Attack?

Panic attacks can be really strong for children experiencing this kind of situation and most of the time; it allows them to accelerate their breathing. Other signs and symptoms include chest pain, difficulty in breathing and fast heart beat.

A panic attack can make a boy think that something is terrible where he cannot escape that is really about to happen. Some children say that when they undergo panic attack, they feel that they cannot think with clarity.

These panic attacks can last in a short period of time but the one experiencing panic attack might feel that it’s much longer than others think.

 

Different Types from Phobias

There are many different types of phobias but the most common is the social phobia.

The social phobia is a type of fear where children don’t want to be humiliated in from of the people. For instance, a boy with social phobia can be scared to speak with his teacher or trainer or to walk freely without thinking that someone is watching over him.

 

The agoraphobia is another type of phobia. Children with this type of phobia have usual panic attacks to places where they feel they are not secured. Most of the time they avoid places where there is huge crowd of people.

Claustrophobia is another phobia that involves a fear on going to places that are closed such as the elevator, tunnel or an airplane.

There are many types of phobias to mention about but all examples mentioned above are some of the types that are common to most children.

 

Why The Children Have Phobias?

Nobody knows exactly why some children have phobias. Scientifically speaking, it has something to do with the genetic factors like if the child has relatives or family members who experience with similar type of phobia such as his father. Sometimes, a traumatic situation in the life of a boy – like the death of a father, divorce of the parents – can allow them to manifest a specific type of phobia.

According to statistics, in the United States, out of one hundred people there are five persons who have one or more phobias and men are more susceptible than women in general. In most cases, majority of social phobia cases begin during a person’s adolescent stage though another types of phobias may manifest during this stage as well.

 

How to Treat a Phobia?

Basically, children with phobias must be brought to an expert doctor who can handle about this kind of medical problem; a psychiatrist for this matter would be very helpful. For serious cases, these children are given medicines to manage their phobias. Other treatments include relaxation exercises to maintain their sense of control over their phobias. Likewise, the treatment can take weeks to months and more until a child finally resolve his or her phobia.

It is important to remember that the phobias can be treated and that the children can learn to handle them and to feel that they have control over themselves. Parents must be there at all times to support their children in order for him or her to resolve the object of his or her fear.

Is it possible to provide home education to your children? The United States is one of the countries worldwide that provides home education for residing children but in accordance with the parents’ option. However, each state may have its own norms but Massachusetts for instance, has some restrictions like demanding the parents to register in a registry wherein they must ask for permission so their children can be educated at home.

The education trends particularly in math and science in the United State are quite regressing in some way. For more than several decades now, the country has been suffering a considerable turning down of technical talented individuals. Because of this, companies from most of the states are outsourcing overseas and are willing to pay higher salaries for most technical jobs they need. The outsourcing trend is so popular today since most businesses from the United States can’t get enough highly technical individuals to do the specific jobs and thus, they are going outside the U.S. boundaries.

 

A lot of us think that the education in the United States is the number one in the globe but unfortunately, it ranks number 36 worldwide. This means that there are about 35 other countries which can do far more great in teaching their children particularly in major subjects like math and science as compared in the United States.

 

The impact would not be about who has to claim the number one spot, but it is about the impact on the standing of the U.S. economy and whole country’s future too. When fewer technically talented individuals are produced, the economic status would be highly at risk. This is one of the reasons on why a lot of companies choose to outsource highly technically-inclined personnel from overseas.

 

Similarly, if Americans will continue on doing awfully in math and science education, then chances would be that the country can’t create more technically-talented individuals who can do more technical advancements or developments especially in the field of medicine and technology and the 35 other countries will have that opportunity.

 

To address this dreadful dilemma, it is best if educators and parents should cooperate in elevating the potentials of the children. Since learning starts first from home, parents should encourage their children about doing well in school particularly in math and science. History of Special Education in the United States

The Special Education programs in the U.S.A. were mandated by the United States Congress in 1975 while passing on a federal law called the Education for all Handicapped Children Act to address the prejudice acts made by public educational organizations against individuals with disabilities. The federal law was renamed as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to strengthen its mission in protecting the people with disabilities. However, let’s take a look on the significant timeline of IDEA before its mandatory.

 

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, addressed a campaign in the Congress in 1963 for the need to develop the state’s local facilities, to provide more funds on doing further research on disabilities and to educate the citizens on how to handle children with disabilities. However, the campaign was not pursued because the president’s assassination in the same year.

 

Following his death, J. Kennedy’s sister- Eunice Kennedy Shriver was able to commence the Special Olympics (the leading sports organization for the people with disabilities which provides constant trainings and competitions to over 3.7 million athletes in 0ver 170 countries worldwide).

 

In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was inaugurated in putting an end on the racial segregation which was prevalent in schools back then. Because of the extensive voting rights campaign, the Jim Crow Laws were entirely abolished. For those who aren’t familiar with these laws, Jim Crow laws were the state and local U.S. laws ratified between 1876 and 1965 in which there was  racial isolation  between black and white Americans in most public facilities.

 

Subsequently, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was then mandated in 1965 which led the commencement of Special Education in the U.S. which aimed to reduce the educational discrimination for deprived children. The amendments were able to focus on providing federal funds to most educational institutions at the same time providing additional funds to aid all state-operated schools that caters children with special needs.

 

Additionally, President Lyndon Baines Johnsons, the next president of the former President Kennedy, was able to approve the Medicare and Medicaid Bill on July 30, 1965 intended for the health care of the people with disabilities. The Washington School for the Deaf (WSD) is an educational institution that endeavors in helping all deaf students in the Washing ton to foster their talents and skills and to encourage them to live a normal life despite their conditions. The education program provided by WSD caters students with age bracket between 3 to 21 years old.

 

It also provides a standard high school curriculum including several requisite and optional classes but the graduation requirements are still within the State of Washington policies.

 

The education programs are tailored in such a way that these can meet the each student needs but should still fulfill with the state’s requirements. For one, the residential program is intended for elementary and high school students. It contains six cottages that are designed to provide a home-like ambiance for all the students. Unending Issues on Sex Education in the U.S.

Sex education has become a part as a formal program in the U.S. where most students are taught about wide array of issues regarding human sexuality such as sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, sexual anatomy, reproductive health, abstinence, contraception and other related matters concerning the subject. Generally, the subject is taught particularly from the parents, caregivers, educational programs, and any public health promotion.

 

For teenagers, sex education is perhaps one of the debatable subject matter that is well-tackled in the U.S. and until now there is no exact answer on whether it can really benefit the students or just simply a form of distraction for them.

 

Several groups are continuously discussing on debates about what should only be tackled on this subject. The social conservatives for one, considers that the topic should only be centered entirely on the abstinence while a few supporters from the comprehensive sex education thinks that the use of contraceptives should also be included in the program. Each group has a say on this matter but let’s just focus on doing deep research to be able to come up a better solution on what to include and not to include in the program in accordance with the students wellbeing.

This can be quite difficult to handle but with proper guidance from the parents and educators, students can simply be taught on how to manage themselves with the idea that in every aspect of life there is always limitations or restrictions that they should keep in mind.
